Chronic Fatique in Women
The Med-Health 360 Prescription
Introduction
Chronic fatigue is extremely debilitating. It is more than just being tired all the time. Physical symptoms such as headaches and muscle pain, and mental symptoms such as memory loss and low mood can render the sufferer unable to function. Relationships can suffer, a social life is almost non-existent and self-confidence and self-esteem are torn down by negative thoughts.
There are ways to help alleviate the symptoms and improve energy levels. Studies have found a link between chronic fatigue and women going through menopause. With hormonal replacement therapy, better nutrition, an exercise program, and stress reduction, chronic fatigue is reduced.
At Med-Health 360, we spend time getting to know you, getting lab tests done to check your hormone levels and then work with you to find a program that can help improve your energy levels and alleviate the symptoms of your chronic fatigue.

Understanding Chronic Fatigue in Women
Many women experience chronic fatigue due to the hormonal imbalances within their body. Many of the symptoms of menopause can affect energy levels and leave women excessively tired and with low energy.
Exercise, developing a good sleep routine, reducing stress, cooling your bedroom to try to avoid night sweats and avoiding alcohol and heavy meals can all help improve energy levels.
Causes of Chronic Fatigue in Women
Hot Flashes
While the precise mechanism that triggers hot flashes isn’t well understood, we do know that the root cause is the decline in estrogen and progesterone that comes with menopause. This decline in estrogen and progesterone causes the hypothalamus gland to go a little haywire. Since the hypothalamus controls body temperature, this means your body’s thermostat gets its signals crossed. It tries to cool you down because it thinks you’re hot, when in fact you’re not.
Hot flashes are a 24-hour-a-day curse. When hot flashes strike at night, they wake you up. And since night sweats can leave you with a case of the chills, getting back to sleep is often difficult. This can lead to chronic fatigue
Mood Issues
Mood issues like anxiety and depression also go hand-in-hand with menopause, and are notorious for disrupting sleep and causing fatigue. This trend becomes a vicious circle: you feel anxious and depressed, and that results in not being able to sleep; not being able to sleep results in being fatigued; being fatigued results in being even more anxious and depressed, and so on.
Diminished Hormones
Hormone imbalance is at the root of it all. Here’s why:
- Imbalances in estrogen and progesterone cause night sweats.
- Imbalances in estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and thyroid cause mood issues like anxiety and depression.
- Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone all play important roles in regulating sleep. Inadequate quantities of one or all of these hormones can disrupt your body clock, and therefore disrupt your sleep schedule.
Low thyroid
Low Thyroid is common during menopause and perimenopause. One of its symptoms is insomnia.
Adrenal Fatigue and excess Cortisol
Adrenal fatigue, as a consequence of stress and excess cortisol production, is a known sleep disrupter.
When the body is under stress, the adrenal glands release cortisol. If they secrete too much cortisol for too long, they become fatigued and cortisol production becomes inadequate. This reduced production of cortisol will leave you feeling exhausted.
A Viscious Cycle: Depression and Insomnia
The fatigue associated with menopause can be a byproduct of depression, and depression is a symptom of hormone imbalance in women. Depression is also notorious for disrupting sleep. If you aren’t sleeping well, you guessed it — you’ll be tired. Depression and insomnia will also negatively impact physical activity. Insufficient exercise, in turn, contributes to depression and fatigue. So the cycle goes…
