Why Do We Need Hormone Replacement Therapy?

It is important to understand that although most people think of testosterone as the “male” hormone and estrogen as the “female” hormone, men and women actually produce and circulate both hormones; they are simply present in different proportions.  Both estrogen and testosterone decrease dramatically as a person ages beginning around the age of 30 and heading downwards from there.  By the time a person reaches the age of 50, the levels of both estrogen, testosterone, and other essential hormones including thyroid hormone, cortisol, and DHEA have decreased to levels that no longer properly support normal physiological functions.  They have entered menopause or manopause.

Hormones act as communication signals and triggers for proper organ function.  For example, estrogen which regulates female fertility, increases during adolescence and pregnancy while decreases as a woman ages beyond child-bearing age; testosterone regulates male maturity, increases male sex drive and muscle production and decreases as a male ages; and cortisol along with DHEA regulate how we react to stress. Without positive levels of these hormones our bodies begin to act out and our minds become less functional. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is designed to help these symptoms by providing our bodies with the necessary hormones needed to function.

Why We Use Bioidentical Hormone Therapy here at Med-Health360

Bioidentical hormone therapy, or BHRT, is also often referred to as natural hormone therapy.  Bioidentical hormones are hormones that are chemically the same as those that the body produces.  Although they are made in a laboratory, bioidentical hormones mimic the hormones the human body produces naturally.  As a result, the body should not be able to tell the difference between the hormones it produces and the bioidentical ones.  Bioidentical hormones can be made from a variety of sources that span plant and animal products.  Specific hormones used in BHRT include estrone, progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA.

We recommend BHRT instead of the more traditional hormone therapy treatments because of their ability to mimic the hormones naturally found in our bodies. Studies show that they are safer and more effective form of hormone replacement and have lower risks for associated medical conditions such as breast cancer and heart disease. Here at Med-Health360 we create an individualized treatment plan to ensure your bioidentical hormone therapy is just right for your needs.
