Estrogen in Men

The Med-Health 360 Prescription

Why Do Men Need Estrogen?

Although traditionally we think of estrogen as being a ‘female’ hormone and testosterone as a ‘male’ hormone, men and women need both to function. So men need estrogen, just not as much as they need testosterone. The ratios need to be balanced in order for sexual function and development to be healthy. Estrogen is also important for the health of your heart, brain, and bones.  There are three types of estrogen: estriol, estrone and estradiol. Estradiol is the primary type of estrogen found in men. It plays an important role in sexual function and controls men’s sex drive, erections and sperm production. Elevated estrogen in many ways counteracts that of testosterone and can lead to infertility, gynecomastia (man boobs) and the ability to get an erection and keep it. Low estrogen levels can result in reduced sexual desire, exhaustion, lose of hair, shrinking muscle mass and concentration issues.

Facts About Estrogen In Men

  • Estrogen is important in men for cardiovascular, brain, and bone health
  • Elevated estrogen levels compete with testosterone levels
  • Elevated levels relative to testosterone can cause health problems including fatigue, weight gain, beer belly, decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and changes in mood.
  • Gynecomastia (male boobs) can result from elevated estrogen levels in men

Finding The Optimal Levels of Estrogen and Testosterone

So knowing that both hormones are required in order for our bodies to function in a healthy and positive way, how do we know what the ratio should be? There is no specific calculation; age, health and other factors have to be considered. A simple blood test will help determine where your levels of both hormones are and based on the symptoms you are experiencing, hormone therapy can be individualized to replace what is needed.

As men age their levels of testosterone decreases. Many men experience a male version of menopause with similar symptoms to menopause for women. Weight gain, lower sexual desire, insomnia, mood swings and prostrate conditions are typical symptoms of male menopause. What the medical society are now finding is that these male menopause symptoms are also caused by low estrogen. It is now important to work on solutions that include replacing all lost hormones, not just testosterone.

Managing Estrogen in Men

Managing levels of estrogen in men can be as important to male health as managing testosterone levels.  Treatment protocols might include testosterone replacement therapy and/or controlling elevated estrogen levels by placing men on an estrogen blocker as needed. Estrogen blockers effectively suppress estrogen conversion at the same time as we’re increasing testosterone levels, thereby eliminating existing symptoms, and preventing future ones.  It is often difficult to find the correct balance between the two based on symptoms.

What Are Bioidentical Hormones?

Bioidentical hormones are synthetic hormones derived from plant estrogens that are chemically identical to the hormones produced by your body.  Common hormone treatments include estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone replacement.  Generic forms are available, but compounded hormones can be synthesized to specifically target an individuals needs.  These compounded bioidentical hormones are safer for patients when prescribed by a reputable physician who understands that not all patients are created equal.

Benefits of Bioidentical Hormone Therapy For Men

Bioidentical Pellet Therapy offers many benefits to men:

  • Bioidentical Pellet Therapy uses hormones that are bioidentical, this means the hormones are the exact same molecular structure as the naturally occurring human hormones.
  • Bioidentical hormones are found in nature and are derived from plants such as soy and yam.
  • Bioidentical Pellet Therapy uses hormones that are more natural to the human body and can often result in fewer negative side effects than those often prescribed by conventional physicians.
  • Bioidentical pellet therapy offers a convenient benefit as the pellets remain in the body and release a steady state of hormones that the body requires.
  • They can help with the prevention of Type 2 diabetes, lower the risk of a heart attack and can decreased the risk of Alzheimer’s.
  • It can improve energy levels, mental ability, sleep and enhance sexual libido

Frequently Asked Questions

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) has actually been used in the United States since 1938. Bio-identical Hormones are all natural plant based products made from yams and a small amount of soy. These hormones have the same molecular structure as the hormones produced within our own bodies. There are numerous studies worldwide that document the benefits and safety of BHRT. These studies also report a lower incidence of side effects when compared with prescription drugs. BHRT should not be confused with “synthetic hormones which are typically found in many creams, gels and injectables used for hormone replacement.

BHRT is a short, simple in-office procedure using local anesthesia. Your doctor will insert the pellets into the fatty layer just beneath your skin. In men and women, a small incision is made in the buttocks or in the lower abdomen. The process is painless and takes just a few minutes.

One of greatest advantages of pellet therapy is the low incidence of side effects. Although extremely rare, side effects may include: slight bruising, minor bleeding, infection or extrusion of the pellets.

Your doctor will interpret your blood tests and determine an appropriate dosage specifically designed for your body. Women who receive estrogen can feel significantly better in 24-36 hours. Men and women who receive testosterone will start to feel relief of symptoms in 10-14 days. After your pellet insertion, you should avoid vigorous exercise for a few days as directed by your physician. Your doctor will evaluate your hormone levels on an ongoing basis and monitor any future changes needed.

You can obtain BHRT Pellets by scheduling an appointment with a trained, certified physician who specializes in hormonal therapy. In order to obtain the correct dosage and proper placement of the pellets, the doctor should be knowledgeable and specifically trained in pellet therapy!
