What is Botox?

BOTOX (Botulinum toxin) is an injectable wrinkle relaxer that is made of purified botulinum toxin to soften dynamic wrinkles and fine lines. It is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and related species. It is FDA approved and is one of the most common beauty procedures in the world. Nearly 7.7 million people had Botox in the US in 2019.

BOTOX can keep you younger for longer by quieting hyperactive facial muscles dramatically.

How It Works

BOTOX injections are used for patients who hope to diminish and soften the visible look of dynamic wrinkles, lines, and moderate folds on their upper face in a nonsurgical way. BOTOX is often thought of as a preventive anti-aging treatment even if static wrinkles have not yet formed — keep in mind how often you find yourself making facial expressions. It is an effective noninvasive solution if you have obvious forehead wrinkles or frown lines between the brows. It is also a solution for Crow’s feet around the eyes. If you experience more severe and deeper lines, a combination of BOTOX and a filler may be a better option. Also, if you are over the age of 50 with moderate to severe skin laxity, you may be a candidate for a facelift surgery. This delivers a more impactful result and it is meant to last years. Aesthetica Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center offers various facelifts, blepharoplasties, and brow lifts as effective options.

What to Expect

Following the BOTOX injection, you are allowed to return to your typical schedule, although strenuous activities like exercise should be postponed for a minimum of a day. You will be advised to sleep with your head propped up for at least one night and to avoid touching your face, which can accidentally spread the BOTOX to other areas. The injected sections of your face can become bruised, red, or swollen for a couple of days, but you should not have any severe or lasting side effects. In the majority of cases, it takes around one week before the final results of BOTOX become visible. The results generally last 3 – 4 months. You can talk to your BOTOX injector about when to make a follow-up appointment at Aesthetica Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center to refresh your results.

FAQs About Botox®

When administered properly, BOTOX rarely causes any complications. With that said, it is still very important to find someone who has experience in handling this medication, like Dr. Chang. Too much of the product can cause an undesirable outcome. A skilled practitioner will use just enough of the medication to effectively freeze the facial muscles that cause wrinkles while leaving nearby muscles unaffected. BOTOX is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments on the market today. It is safe and effective, and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In addition to cosmetic usage, BOTOX is also used to treat medical conditions such as facial spasms, excessive sweating, uncontrollable blinking, and migraines.
BOTOX, Dysport, and Xeomin are all injectable wrinkle treatments that use botulinum toxin (type A). All three relax facial muscles to soften dynamic wrinkles, but each formula is slightly different to suit different areas and needs. There are subtle differences between them including the dosage, spread, and length of results. Dr. Chang will choose the best brand or brands to match with your needs and goals to create your best results.
Wrinkle relaxers, like BOTOX, and wrinkle fillers, like Juvéderm and Restylane, are both popular cosmetic treatments that decrease wrinkles and smooth fine lines. BOTOX relaxes overused facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, like frown lines (between the eyebrows), forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet (in the outer corner’s of the eyes), and smile lines. Wrinkle fillers add volume under the skin to fill hollow areas and decrease the appearance of wrinkles on the surface. Depending on your goals, Dr. Chang may recommend BOTOX, injectable fillers, or a combination of both for a liquid “facelift.”
The results from BOTOX can last up to four months. Most patients schedule an appointment every season or quarter to refresh their results, but you may want to come back sooner or wait longer. If you are getting BOTOX while you are younger as a preventative treatment, you may be able to schedule appointments further apart. After listening to your goals and creating your treatment plan, Dr. Chang will be better able to estimate when you should schedule your next appointment.
Your cost for a BOTOX treatment will depend on how much product is used. This will vary based on your needs and goals. During your consultation, Dr. Chang will create your personal treatment plan before he can estimate your costs. BOTOX can produce amazing results when performed by a skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. Chang, but it can also be unsafe if done by someone without training, which is why it’s better to avoid places offering cheap, discounted, or knock-off injections.
